Sekiro: No Defeat Was Never a Movie — Crunchyroll Announces 8-Episode Series for Jan 8, 2027

The Sekiro: No Defeat anime just pulled the ultimate plot twist — and it happened off-screen.

The adaptation of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been playing Japanese cinemas as a 107-minute film, earning an extended theatrical run on popular demand. But on Thursday, September 24, Crunchyroll announced the film was never the final form: starting January 8, 2027, No Defeat streams as an eight-episode weekly series — with scenes and cuts that never appeared in the theatrical version.

Producer Tetsushi Suzuki addressed the switch on the anime's official site, apologizing for not disclosing the episodic format sooner. The project began life as an eight-episode TV series, he explained, but the team wanted audiences to experience the visuals and sound on the big screen first — so an edited version played theatrically as a preview. "We apologize for not informing you that the film currently showing is an edited version and for not having informed you about the TV series," Suzuki said.

The series is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna for studio Qzil.la, and will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll worldwide (excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus).

Fans are already running with it — the timeline is full of "hesitation is defeat" memes, and the consensus is hype: eight episodes of Wolf and Kuro's story beats a two-hour cut every time.
