The wait is almost over. On September 30, ufotable released the FINAL trailer for the Witch on the Holy Night anime film — the last and biggest look at the movie before it hits Japanese theaters on November 20, 2026.

The roughly 90-second trailer is packed with new footage: Aoko Aozaki's everyday life as a student council president, her training under the mysterious Kuonji Alice, her complicated bond with transfer student Soujyurou Shizuki — and the supernatural battles that make this one of ufotable's most visually ambitious projects yet.

But the real headline is the music. The trailer premieres the film's theme song, "Yoru to Ao" (Night and Blue), by supercell — with vocals by Yanaginagi. It's the first new supercell song sung by Yanaginagi since "Today Is A Beautiful Day" in 2011, roughly fifteen years ago. ryo, who wrote, composed, and arranged the track, said in a note published the same day: "Without this offer, I think supercell would still be asleep."

It's a full-circle moment. supercell performed "Hoshi ga Matataku Konna Yoru ni," the ending theme of the original Witch on the Holy Night visual novel back in 2010. Sixteen years later, they're back on the same title — this time for the big screen.

What is Witch on the Holy Night?

Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoutsukai no Yoru) is a visual novel by TYPE-MOON, written by Kinoko Nasu — the creator of Fate/stay night and Tsukihime. The game first launched in Japan on April 12, 2012, with an English version released globally in December 2022 and on Steam in 2023.

Set in the late 1980s, the story follows Aoko Aozaki, a girl born into a prestigious family of modern mages. Despite having little interest in pursuing magic, Aoko is unexpectedly chosen to inherit her family's magical legacy — and begins training under Kuonji Alice, a quiet witch living alone in a manor on a hill. Between student council duties and magecraft lessons, she befriends Soujyurou Shizuki, a transfer student who seems strangely disconnected from modern society. Meanwhile, her older sister Touko believes the magical inheritance rightfully belonged to her — and that resentment sets the stage for conflict.

The anime adaptation was first announced in December 2021, with ufotable handling animation production. That's the studio behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, the Heaven's Feel film trilogy, and The Garden of Sinners.

Cast and staff

The main cast features Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa as Alice Kuonji, and Yusuke Kobayashi as Soujyurou Shizuki. Character designs come from Moe Tsuzuki, with original character designs by Hirokazu Koyama, and music by Hideyuki Fukasawa. A new Hirokazu Koyama character visual of Aoko and Alice was unveiled alongside the trailer.

When and where to watch

The film opens in Japan on November 20, 2026, screening in 347 theaters across the country. Outside Japan, it will release in more than 45 countries and regions, with Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures bringing it to the United States and Canada on January 29, 2027 — in Japanese with English subtitles as well as an English dub. New MoviTicket sales begin October 2, 2026.

The announcement was made during the KYOMAF Stage at the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, with Yusuke Kobayashi and Kana Hanazawa attending the panel.

Between the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle films and now this, ufotable is quietly stacking one of the strongest anime theatrical slates in years. The question is whether Witch on the Holy Night can break out beyond the TYPE-MOON faithful — and with supercell's return pulling in the anisong crowd too, it has a real shot.
